San Diego is the most relaxed of California's big cities and the easiest to like. The coastline does most of the work — cliffs at Sunset Cliffs, sea lions at La Jolla, a boardwalk at Pacific Beach — and Balboa Park handles the culture. Eat Mexican food constantly, get in the water at least once, and do not over-plan.

A car makes the coast and Balboa Park much easier, though each neighbourhood is walkable in itself. The trolley runs downtown and to the border; rideshare covers the rest. Beach parking in summer is the only real frustration.
The weather is famously stable, so this is about crowds. Summer is busiest; September and October are warm, quiet and the best value. May and June bring the coastal marine layer that clears by midday.
The zoo and the museums are the big-ticket items at $30–70. Beaches are free, parking is not. Food is cheap if you eat Mexican and expensive if you do not.
