Kyoto is a city where the hour matters more than the route. Day one walks the eastern hills — Kiyomizu-dera, the Higashiyama lanes and Gion at dusk. Day two starts at Fushimi Inari before 7am, then crosses to Arashiyama in the afternoon when the morning coaches have left. Day three is Nara, thirty-five minutes away. Book a tea ceremony and any kaiseki dinner ahead; the temples need nothing but an early alarm.
